April is National Fair Housing Month
National Fair Housing Month celebrates the passage of the Fair Housing Act in April, 1968, a national law that prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, and gender. The Act was later amended to include protections for people with disabilities and families with children. In the State of California, there are additional protections for marital status, sexual orientation, ancestry, source of income and for arbitrary characteristics such as age or occupation.
Fair Housing Month reminds us that the principle of fair housing is not only state and national law, but a fundamental human concept and entitlement for all people. As a community we welcome all good neighbors, recognizing the contributions and richness tendered by a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds, colors, ethnicities or religious traditions. The County of Marin and all of the jurisdictions in the county will join Fair Housing Advocates of Northern California to proclaim their support for National Fair Housing Month. We invite all Marin residents to also join us in celebrating Fair Housing Month by promoting and encouraging the fair housing concepts in their neighborhoods, schools and communities. |
