Cy Pres Awards
The term "cy pres" is a French term that means "as near as possible." Cy pres awards are designated when there are residual funds in class action lawsuits, probate matters, and other court cases that are unclaimed and cannot be distributed to the class members or beneficiaries for a variety of reasons. Courts can distribute these funds to charitable organizations, including nonprofit organizations providing legal services to indigent.
Cy pres awards allow nonprofits to investigate, document, and publicize abuses and to pursue vital consumer education and protection projects that are not funded through tradition grant making entities.
Fair housing ensures that more people have access to affordable housing, good schools, better employment, and other key services that help them to thrive in their communities. Fair Housing Advocates of Northern California (FHANC) is one of the only fair housing agencies in Northern California that provides full-service legal, advocacy and counseling. We work to ensure that everyone has access to safe and affordable housing regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, religion, familial status, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, source of income or any other arbitrary factor covered by law. FHANC is an appropriate recipient of cy pres funds. Many of our clients are low- and moderate-income residents who are victims of housing discrimination. These funds make a significant impact in the lives of FHANC clients by helping them to obtain or maintain their housing.
